Christian Aid Week

admin June 2nd, 2008

Now really is the time to pay attention to Christian Aid Week; with two horrendous natural disasters happening in the space of a fortnight the time to donate is now!

On the 11th of May the death toll of the Burma Cyclone stood at 32,000, these people perished at the mercy of the most horrific natural disasters in the last century. Since the accident, on the 2nd of May, it has been reported by Christian Aid that not one person has died of thirst, hunger or disease; yet with aid only reaching 1/3 of those affected and with Burma’s government refusing to co-operate and allow foreign aid workers into the country this will easily change; demonstrating the need for local aid workers and aid supplies.

A mere ten days later, an earthquake hit the Sichuan province in China, the death toll already at 12,000. The destruction caused by the 7.9 magnitude quake is heart breaking; reports are coming through of a school collapsing in Dujiangyan city, where 900 students were buried and at least 50 killed, and of around 10,000 people thought to remain buried under massive landslides in outlying towns and villages. Thankfully China’s quick response has allowed for an immediate search and recovery operation for survivors; but the impact on Sichuan and its inhabitants will last a lifetime.

Christian Aid’s local partners are the first to respond when disaster strikes across the globe; helping to provide aid, search and recover, rebuild and assist in the rescue operations. Currently Christian Aid local partners are in Burma responding to the needs of survivors. They are distributing water purification tablets, blankets and medicines to 100,000 people in the worst-hit areas.
