Top Eco-Friendly Websites

admin June 2nd, 2008

Eco-friendly are the buzz words of the moment; everyone is clambering to do their bit for the environment. However, there is more to it than just recycling your glass bottles and carrying a canvas shopping bag; it is a lifestyle and everything you do in your daily life can have an impact. Unsurprisingly the internet has also stepped up to the ‘eco’ plate, not only does it provide up to date information on climate change, but it can provide you with an array of carbon footprint calculators, hints and tips to reduce your emissions and through clicking onto the correct sites you can actively make a change.

Here are some of the best ‘eco’ sites out there at the moment.

Tree Hugger and Grist
Both are media outlets for up to date climate change news, providing informative and compelling journalism. An interesting feature on the US based Grist sites includes an insight into the US presidential elections with the how green is your candidate? debate.

Ecocho is a search engine that for every 1000 searches on the site will “offset” a ton of greenhouse gases, paid for by advertisement.

Install Greenbook on your Facebook profile and not only will you receive handy tips from the site but your registration will generate sponsorship money that is then used to reduce harmful emissions produced through the use of Facebook.

GreenMoves is an online estate agent service solely dedicated to the buying and selling of eco-homes in the UK, and abroad.

Gooshing is the ethical shopping tool that advises consumers on how ethical the product is you are purchasing; ensuring you buy your products from the most responsible companies, in turn boycotting the corporations that do not consider animal welfare, human rights or the environment.

Nigels Eco Store is an online store stocking cool and funky eco-friendly clothing, accessories, bits and bobs.

CBBC Newsround is a fun and informative website to educate children on the dangers of climate change and advising on the ways they can make changes.

Green Motor Sport is a site devoted to the coverage of environmental racing; research into alternative future energies and eco-friendly car equipment.

Travel Quest has a site specifically dedicated to green accommodation providers (hotels, self-catering, B&B, guest houses, hostels etc.) all of which have stated green, environmentally friendly and ecological aims (e.g. green buildings, use of green energy such as solar and wind power, use of eco friendly products, recycling and composting, use of fairly traded products etc.).
The site is also now incorporating vegan, vegetarian and organic accommodation.

When you “click to give” on the Ecology Fund website their sponsors pay the project you selected; projects include protecting the Amazon Rainforest or planting a tree in Mexico as part of a reforestation project to prevent the depletion of the North American Monarch butterfly. The biggest coo of this site is that you can click on every project every day, maximising the contribution and if you register on the site 500 square feet of wilderness will be preserved in your name.
Every times Tree Donate is clicked five times a tree is planted in a bid to restore Niagara’s fragmented forest ecosystem.
