Whitehall IT system set for green overhaul

The UK government are to become the first in the world to make its computer system “carbon neutral”.
Computers contribute 20% to the governments overall carbon emissions and they plan to cut this percentage by turning off computers at night and making sure servers are not left standing idle. Actions such as this, it is estimated will save around 117,500 tonnes of carbon, which is the equivalent of taking 40,000. Other initiatives include reusing old computer equipment and reducing the purchase of new items, the manufacturing of which uses up a lot of energy.
The main aim of the government is to have the whole system completely carbon neutral by 2020; a bold target for the government to make and it is something businesses should also be following.
Along with turning our computers off at night time here are some other tips that we can follow;
During usage, only have your screen as bright as you need it.
If you’re going to use a screen saver, use a blank (black) screen - animated screen savers just consume electricity unnecessarily.
For your next computer, consider a notebook instead of desktop - these use under 50% the electricity of a desktop machine.
Opt for a smaller screen it consumes less.
