Google unveils customised search

Google has revealed their new WikiSearch facility that lets searchers customise and refine their search queries.

Users will be able to re-order, remove, add and comment on specific web search results, so if you don’t like a particular result you can say so! The reranked and amended search results are then saved for future searching. Users will also be able to click and see how others have customised their search results, perhaps giving users an insight into what sites are useful and which aren’t.

Google are particular in stating that such customising will only affect an individuals own search engine rankings, and that non account holders will still see the regular organic search engine results.

It alls sound very ‘dynamic’ and ‘interactive’, however, what are the real disadvantages and advantages of the WikiSearch facility.

Advantages:

  • Your search results will be more useful to you
  • You get rid of all the irrelevant websites from your rankings
  • You can share and recommend quality websites
  • It could still be applicable in terms of SEO
  • A website may get more targeted traffic

Disadvantages:

  • You will greatly limit the variety of your search results
  • Influence on the natural search engine results, although Google deny that they will be using the WikiSearch as a feedback tool on the rankings, many SEO pundits find this hard to believe… only time will tell.
  • With new websites appearing on the scene every day by using your customisation tool you are missing out on potentially brilliant websites.
  • Search engine may now become the playground for users to vote websites up and down willy nilly.

Being in its early stages it is hard to see what impact WikiSearch will have upon traffic and SEO as an industry, but there is no doubt that it will make our jobs a little more interesting.
