It was revealed this week that two Google searches emits the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle; the primary cause being the energy used to power the users computer and the computers generating the search engines.
With around 200 million searches being performed every day it comes as no surprise that it is estimated the global IT sector has generated as much greenhouse gas as the world’s airlines put together.
A lot can be done to minimize this; by those who search, the search engines and companies working within the internet industry. As we have already said in this post, we should all do our bit to minimise our impact on the environment, simple things can be make a big difference such as recycling, ensuring all computers are turned off at night time, minimizing paper usage, energy saving light bulbs and energy saving products such as the Eco Button.
