Looking for some eco inspiration?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

We are big fans of all things eco friendly in the office and always on the hunt for some enviro inspiration.

So you can only imagine our joy when we came across the Business Green website, a comprehensive website dedicated to all things eco friendly but specifically targeted to the business sector. Interesting resources include a guide to green office fashion and green guide to office parties.

Office lights left on overnight use enough energy in a year to heat a home for almost 5 months.

Another interesting website for businesses is the Carbon Trust website, it was set up by Government in 2001 as an independent company. The aim of the organisation is to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy by working with organisations to reduce carbon emissions and develop commercial low carbon technologies.

At first glance going eco can appear to be a ‘bit of a hassle’, however, there are many ways an organisation can benefit from greening it up a bit.

Image: With growing concern over our  melting icebergs, growing rubbish piles and rising sea levels business decision makers and consumers alike are under pressure to choose the greener option. Doing your bit for the environment will not only demonstrate that you are giving something back but may also increase your desirability.

Saving money: Wise investments in energy saving light bulbs, solar panels, wind mills, and reusable items will all help to save you money. As energy bills rise does it not make sense to choose energy efficient products and follow green practise to try keep bills down.

Innovation: Challenging yourself to change traditional marketing practices, such as direct mailing which can be damaging to the environment, can lead to innovation and the generation of truly unique marketing ideas which ultimately will set you apart from the rest. Look at ‘natural media’ company Mind the Curb by turning traditional advertising concepts on their head they have came up with a entirely green ways for companies to advertise their brands.

Diary of the Twitter Newbies

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Exciting news this week, we broke the 100 followers mark- big deal for us not so much for everyone else who seems to be celebrating their 500 followers. Our 100 followers, however, are an indication that we are doing something right!

We have also discovered lately that we are becoming a lot more comfortable with the concept of micro-blogging, at first we were unsure of what to write about telling people that you’re away to tuck into a bowl of soup just doesn’t sound that interesting does it?? However, as we have started making connections with people in our local area we have also found ourselves lamenting with them about menial subjects such as the rubbish weather and even discussing the books we are reading- showing that chit chat isn’t always boring.

Looking at at it from a business point of view we have also became more comfortable using it as a tool, using our experienced followers to ask if there are any good business networking events going on and for inspiration for our blog, in every instance the response has always been positive and for any prospective business Twitterers we would encourage you to lose inhibitions when it comes to asking for help from the Twitter community.

Last weeks Tip was to retweet, which we have been trying to do. We have a look at what others were retweeting and if we are honest we didn’t really understand the relevance of retweeting what they did… again this led us into uncomfortable territory: do you retweet everything? or just things you are interested in? or just from people you converse with? In the end we settled for just retweeting fun things, such as “RT Whats your favourite movie, mine is Stepbrothers” – not entirely business related but we are newbies, as you know, and the whole concept of retweeting is still a bit beyond us.

I think a little research is still required on the whole retweeting malark… so we will not be setting a new task/tip for ourselves this week. Next week we will give you a proper rundown of how to use retweets to benefit your business- promise!

Here’s our stats from this week:

Design Crush – edition 4

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Design is everywhere, from street signs to simple food packaging, and much of it goes unnoticed by the untrained eye. Design can influence you without you even noticing and one major element of design that can be very influential is typography. The art of typography has been around for centuries, from cast iron letter and ink right up to our modern day fonts. The history of type and fonts is fascinating however, thats another area altogether. We at 360innovate pride oursleves in keeping up with current design trends and fonts are a major part of this.

Fontorama!

Choosing a font can be vital to the success of a design, whether its a logo or a website, getting the font to match the look and feel you are wanting can be time consuming but ulimately rewarding. With millions of fonts to choose from, your are spoilt for choice. And with sites like Dafont there is unlimited access to free fonts for you to use. Trends emerge through web design and print design and we thought we would talk about a couple of trends that we like within font design.

Hand-Draw Fonts

The first font trend that we love is the use of hand-written fonts. These styles of fonts are being used more and more because of the personal style they give to websites and other media. Hand-written fonts come in a variety of shapes and styles so it is best to use ones that are open and more legible than some sripts to overcome illegibility issues. However be careful not to overload your design with hand-written fonts, use them sparsely to create a more modern feel while still adding the personal touch that you are wanting.

Example of hand-written font:

Retro Inspired Fonts

Another font style we are totally crushing on at the moment are fonts that have a vintage and faded feel. This almost grundgy type of font gives an edgy feel to a design making it look old and used giving the impression of a retro era. Retro styles have had a large comeback and many fonts have embraced this by-gone era providing us with a selection for vintage inspired fonts. Again, this font styles should be used sparingly to really make a statment and impact.

Examples of good retro fonts:

So the next time you are designing, take advantage of all the great trendy fonts out there.

Beating the cyberbullies

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

As a digital marketing company we are heavily involved with online social networks and it is our responsibility to not only be aware of what is happening on these social networks but also to raise awareness of the issues and to provide as much advice as we are qualified to give.

cybermentors logoCybermentors was launched this month to provide support to those suffering at the hands of cyberbullies, it is a horrible thought to think that around 70% of children have been bullied and 50% have been bullied online; whats even more harrowing is the fact that around 20 children a year commit suicide because they are being the target of bullying.

What is Cyberbullying?

The Cybermentors provides the following definition:

Cyberbullying is when someone uses technology, like the internet or a mobile phone, to deliberately hurt, humiliate, harass, or threaten someone else.

Cyberbullying includes things like:

  • Sending nasty or threatening texts or emails
  • Posting abusive messages online – on a social networking site, in a chatroom, or using IM
  • Posting humiliating videos or pictures online, or sending them on to other people
  • Taking on someone else’s identity online in order to upset them
  • Setting up a hate site or a hate group on a SNS site
  • Prank calling

As responsible adults we should all take it upon ourselves to report any of the above behavior if we should come across it online and teach our children to respond the same if they or any of their friend become the victim of online abuse, don’t be fooled into thinking these cyberbullies will never be caught although many people post messages anonymously or  using a false name or email address can be traced and banned by social networks and email providers if they’re found to be bullying others.

  • If you manage a website, email service or social network website that is used by young people then it is your responsibility that it is being used safely:
    • Compile a code of conduct that bans any of the behaviour listed above excluding any members that fail to adhere to it.
    • Make sure that young people who use your messaging, email, mobile or web service know that any messages they send or post may be read by an adult.
    • Provide links to cyberbullying resources and gives as much information on the matter as possible
    • Clearly state throughout the website that abusive behaviour and cyberbullying is not allowed on the website

The CyberMentors campaign aims to provide help and guidance to young internet users, the site features a chat room where registered users can talk with trained CyberMentors and also has a lot of cool features such as videos from celebrities who have suffered from bullying in the past. Many people would be surprised to see boxer Joe Calzaghe as one of the main spokespeople for the campaign, but as a child he, like many other children across the nation, was the victim of bullies. Seeing inspirational people such as Calzaghe talk about their experiences and provide advice to children through the Cybermentors website will hopefully change how young people handle and react to online harassment, making the internet a less volatile place than it already seems to have turned into.

    Businesses

Of course cyberbullying affects adults and businesses as much as it does with young people. With the internet becoming an integral part of the average working day and with the increasing popularity of mobile internet devices such as Blackberrys online abuse can target individuals both during work hours and after. It is estimated that UK businesses lose around £2 billion a year due to absence, staff turnover and loss of production caused by cyberbullying. The amount of bullying varied per sector, however, a survery performed in 2007 revealed that it is more prevalent in sales, media and marketing and telecoms, while in retail bullying was reported as being primarily face-to-face.

Employers must be aware of employees and the rise in cyberbullying in the workplace, ultimatley it will have an impact on your bottom line, be aware of the signs and take action!

    Design Crush – edition 3

    Friday, March 20th, 2009

This weeks design crush comes from our love of chocolate. Many a time there have been large Cadbury’s chocolate bars kicking about the office, soon to disappear. With chocolate on the brain and after just consuming a Creme Egg McFlurry (trying not to think about the calories), we thought we would have a look at the Cadbury site.

With the Easter period coming up and the award winning adverts that they have been producing, we were not disappointed with the official Cadbury site. The first thing that hits you is the colour. Their deep royal purple is the dominant colour ofcourse, but there is colour everywhere. Not one single pixel has been left untouched to create this Cadbury world. The website is successful in creating a complete environmet where you can explore the Cadbury factory through the fantastic Flash animation. Although Flash has been used to navigate the usability is not dependant on just this, and there is additional navigation along the top of the screen to allow for better accessibility. When you start to navigate, the rest of the site is less exciting than the home page due to the normal layouts that don’t have the same amount of impact. However, this does not derive from the overall strong branding that the design has created.

The Cadbury’s site successfully combines their creativity and unique marketing with their traditional yet fun image, producing a site that truely represents Cadbury’s products.

P.S. Only 22 days left to stock up on Creme Eggs, “here today, goo tomorrow” !

Have a nosey with Google Street View

    Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Its fair to say that we in the office are pretty hooked on Google Street view at the moment, it has been around for a while but it has only just introduced views of Glasgow and even though we all live in Glasgow we are still finding it fascinating viewing it through Googles eyes.

    The 360innovate office

Nosey parking aside Google Street View can also be utilised as a handy online tool for businesses, using it to give visitors or customers a more accurate image of the office or business location. For businesses that advertise parking, external facilities or, in the instance of property agents, location views and appearance then Google Street View can be an excellent tool to direct people to.

However, for internal views of your business we would of course always recommend a 360innovate virtual tour to go with. :)

    Diary of the Twitter Newbies

    Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

It’s now been a good few weeks since we started the Twitter Diaries and so far, last week was one of the most exciting, not only because we gained quite a large amount of followers, but also because we began to integrate much more within the fabulous Twitter community. With tip #4, we were to find people in our local area with a Twitter tool. We used the Twitter Grader where we were able to see the top Tweeters in our area and start to follow them and interact. This led us to find out about an up coming Twitter event in our area which we are all set to go to, although we are slightly nervous but excited about. We’re sure meeting people we have been talking to online will not be at all weird!

One great factor of following people located near us (instead of celebs in America!) is that they are on the same time zone meaning we are awake when they are, so we don’t miss out in all the fun chat. Also, we have been able to speak to people of similar professions which is great for networking.

All in all, this week has been very positive and has made both myself and Laura become closer to being Twitter pros. So what next for us Twitter Newbies?

    Tip #5

This weeks tips comes from a lot of reading up on Twitter and so we are going to aim at linking to sites and topics that we are talkng about. This will hopefully be entertaining for our followers making our chat even more fun (impossible I know!). Additionally, we are going to try to retweet topics and fun tweets as we hear this is all the rage!

    Keep posted guys…

    You’ve got mail!

    Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

With all this chat of social media and the excellent ways you can connect to your audience we suddenly realised that we have been neglecting our old faithful friend- the email.

Compared to Twitter and Facebook it may be deemed the more unpopular way to communicate to your target audience but when it comes down to it email marketing is still an effective tool; a survey of online retailers in 2008 revealed that email was second only to paid search when it came to driving high volume, UTalkMarketing.

Yes, we all get inbox overload and much of the mail we do recieve from companies is considered spam- left lingering in our Junk Email File unread, and regardless of the high ROI the above survey revealed the average open rate of an email marketing campaign is a mere 13%.

Averages and statistics aside, an email campaign has a few benefits (affordability) that trump many other techniques such as Pay Per Click, and a carefully planned campaign can produce the results you are looking for.

Here are some things to consider if you are launching your own email marketing campaign:

    Who are you sending to?

Yep, perhaps the most obvious but also the most overlooked aspect of any marketing campaign. It is an assumption that the more you send out the higher the respones, not necessarily true. In some instances, say if you were selling an item such as Tampax, it may be worth actually having a look at your mailing list and ensuring that you are targeting the right market i.e. females between the age of 16 – 35 for instance. This is a very broad example but demonstrates a mistake that could very easily be made.

Putting a little research into your database can have excellent benefits and does not have to be complex and time consuming, using tracking software you can research the activity of recipients thus making it easier in future to send them targeted mail with specific products or information.

    Get into the mix

Integrate your email campaign into your marketing mix, use it to support ongoing promotions or campaigns, or as an information tool.

    Whats it all about

The subject matter and who the email is from could be the crucial factor in whether your email is opened or not. Do not use anything that hints at spammy, easier said than done we know, but avoid talk of “20% off all stock” or “Last chance to buy”, keep the subject title short and try to be creative. Think about the emails you recieve and what makes you want to open them.

As for the From, always use the company do not use a personal name people will immediately be cautious.

    Call to action

Ensure that your email is aligned with whatever aim you have for the email campaign. The general aim being, of course, to direct traffic to your website in which case make sure you put clearly identifiable links to your website. Entice them to your website with links such as “continue reading” or “view full range here”.

    The simple thing in life

Spelling, grammar or poor layout are enough to put people off, so proof read your email and then get another person to do it, and then test the email on some other people. Listen to the feedback and take note, as the saying goes, you often can’t see the wood for the trees. A fresh pair of (unbiased) eyes can sometimes point out very simple changes that can make the difference between a mediocre and a ‘yes please’ email.

    … Test it

Following on from the above, test the email, in all different browsers and email programs to ensure the layout is the same, and more importantly to see if it makes it past the Spam filters.

Finally, there are many different email marketing software services available, many of which will check the ‘spamminess’ of your email, distribute, measure and track your campaign, it is definitely worth investing in such a service or product if you wish to incorporate email marketing into your regular marketing activities.
