we have done very targeted Google AdWord campaigns with form elements above and below the fold. The results speak for themselves, keep form content and calls to action above the fold.

Thanks Sam and Peter for your comments.

I don't have any more information or research on use of the fold when designing for e-commerce wesbites, but my thoughts and research about the mis-understanding and appropriation of the fold, I believe, still apply in this case too!

I hope this helps a little.

Hello John.

I very much like the article. It reminds me of the situations I have with my own clients on many occasions! Do you have plans to write more information on this subject?

Bye,
Sam.

Thanks for writing this article. There have been many times where I have argued the points you mention in the post with clients. Unfortunately most of them still don't seem to grasp it. I think there is something to be said for the need for above the fold in designing for ecommerce sites though. Have you found anything that suggests this is the case too?

Do you plan on writing any further articles on design?

Pete.

Have you looked at the differences between standard website user experience and ecommerce sites? I think there is more evidence to suggest the fold is of greater importance for people needing to quickly find products. What do you think?

David Patterson

Hi Damien

Thanks for your comments.

When I was researching the topic I came across evidence supporting both sides of the argument, however there seemed a lack of empirical evidence to support the continued use of designing based on the fold principle. There is certainly a varied amount of anecdotal evidence to still support the assertion, but I wanted to try and draw on studies that were scientifically founded, as well as a few anecdotal examples discussing the fold.

I guess really my conclusion from the research I looked at and also my own experience as a designer shows that as an idea - it's just not that relevant anymore. It's still talked about a great deal (usually by non-designers I must say) and I was suggesting from my article that it's not something we should get too hung up on. After all there are many important factors to consider when planning and executing an effective web layout!

Nice article! A very important topic for us web designers! As you say, good, structured content is the key. In my experience it's business people who always talk about 'the fold', but don't really understand what it is. This is a great reference article.

What's the topic of your next one?
