Google Officially Takes The Fight To Content Farms !

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Yesterday Google launched a pretty big change to their algorithm that will impact 11.8% of all its search queries. The update has been rolled out in the US only for now and will reduce the rankings of many low quality sites – sites which don’t provide value add for the users and scrape content from other sites which are not very useful, mainly being content farms. Once the algorithm change has been complete sites with original relevant content will be rewarded encouraging a healthier web ecosystem. Google has also noted that this update does not use the data that they have received since the launch of the new Personal Blocklist Chrome extension which we blogged about here, however they have compared the data with the sites that the algorithm change has identified. If Google does manage to stop these black hat SEO techniques then it will be a considerable achievement as this has somewhat plagued the search industry for some time now. So how will this affect you ? If your company provides good quality, relevant and original content and you update your site regularly, then this latest algorithm update will have very little or no effect on site.

Google Social Search Update

Google has rolled out some pretty exciting updates to its social search today.

They have announced that they will now be integrating social media results with regular listings which will see annotations from your friends and the people that you care about should you be logged in to your Google account. Previously these results showed at the bottom of the page, however with this update they will be in direct view of the user.

This could be massive for Google in their war with Facebook who has an alliance with Bing. By connecting with everyone else in the social world Google has shown its more than capable of creating its own social graph !

The Death Of The Content Farms !!

RIP Content Farms!!

Could this finally be the end of the dreaded content farms?

With the rise of SEO in recent years content farms have become all too familiar when searching on Google. However, yesterday Google launched an experimental Chrome extension which will allows users to block sites from their web search results which they feel are not relevant to the search query.  Once you have installed the extension and blocked a site the information will then be sent to Google, who have said that they will study the resulting feedback and explore using it as a potential ranking signal for search results.

Content Farms

This is an early release however Google hopes this extension will improve the users search experience. The extension is available in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, can be downloaded here.

Facebook Rolls Out New Pages !!!

Friday, February 11th, 2011

You may notice something different if you log in to you Facebook Page this morning. The social media giant rolled out several new changes to their pages platform last night with a much cleaner design and a few changes to the page architecture. If you have been using the new Facebook profile then this will be very familiar as they have implemented the same design and features with a few extras which keeps the new design more consistent across the full site.

Some of the new features include

  • New Layout
  • The ability to switch between your profile and the pages that you manage
  • Browse Facebook as your page
  • New photo banner model
  • The ability to add iframes to tabs

The have also introduced a new keyword filter for pages which describes itself as filtering out “words and phrases marked as offensive by the broader community,” without elaborating on what the specific words are nor whether the community alluded to means people on the site or the world at large.

Overall this is a pretty big update from Facebook and an overall improvement to the previous version of Facebook Pages.

What’s your thoughts on this update ?

Social Media Marketing

This is some pretty big news in the world of Social Media this morning, if true. According to reports in The Guardian today Twitter has been in talks with potential suitors, which include both Facebook and Google.  The report has indicated that the deal could be valued at $10 billion, however according to a few sources the talks haven’t progressed very far as of yet.  The Wall Street Journal has reported that the micro blogging service which had estimated revenues at $45 million last year is now valued at a whopping $8 – 10 billion dollars. Both companies are are believed to have bid for Twitter in the past when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is believed to have offered Twitter $500m in stock for the company in 2008, however the deal collapsed. Google were also rumoured to have has a deal rejected recently before the search giant made an offer for Groupon which also collapsed.

Who would you like to see buy Twitter ????

Business Gateway Social Media Event

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Recently Matthew, our Social Media Guy, and I attended a free Business gateway event introducing people to social media. Matthew is a bit of an expert when it comes to social media and has worked with clients such as Dell, HP, SAP and Samsung. You may wonder why he actually attended an introduction to social media if he already has vast knowledge of social media marketing. After all, this was just an introduction. Was he looking for a couple of hours skive – possibly. Was he looking for potential new clients – maybe a bit. Or was he just open to the possibility that he might even learn new things at an introduction?
No matter how much you know, or how much you think you know about SEO, social media, or anything for that matter. It is always important to keep an open mind and listen to what other people are saying. The reason why it is especially true for SEO & Social Media is because both disciplines are still very much in their infancy, and there is so much happening out there it is impossible to pick up on every new technique or technology.

Whilst at the event, everyone was having an open discussion about what effect social media has on your business. Apart from the obvious points that it can drive traffic to your site, be used for relationship & reputation management, I also mentioned the other benefits like how it can actually increase your search engine rankings. A few people nodded politely and agreed, but one woman challenged me and said “Why would search engines pay attention to what people are saying on twitter!? “. To me the answer was obvious, and seemed like common sense, but this is maybe only because I have been involved in search engine optimisation for a while. I went on to tell her that if people are talking positively about a certain product, website or news event, it would probably mean it’s something worth talking so therefore that’s why it should play a part in were you are ranked in the search engine results page.

What people are saying on social media channels, providing it is positive, seems like a common sense way to help determine a pages rank on the search engine results page. Here is a real world example. Like most offices, around lunch time we quite often talk about food and people start throwing around ideas. Occasionally someone hits out with a fantastic idea that makes bellies rumble(we are a very food motivated bunch), and lights the fuse wire for a feeding frenzy. Say for example, someone mentions that they fancy something spicy, and then someone suggests Taco Mazama(which we very often do), that would then start conversation about Taco Mazama and everyone else started talking about how great Taco Mazama is, this would probably become the most popular choice for our lunch.
At the moment quality inbound links and having quality page content in the correct structure are two of the most important factors that determine your rankings on the SERPS*. Although search engines have already started to pay attention to what is being said on social networking sites such as twitter. I feel that in the future this is going to be something that has a greater impact in your rankings on the SERP*.

Visions of the future

At the moment we have real time results, say for example there is a breaking news event and you search for it on Google, there is a good chance you will get news and social media results combined with the normal search results. Just now if you type in ‘italian restaurant’ and Google has Geo-located you, chances are that you will get results for Italian restaurants in your area. Soon, I think we are going to see real time results based on your area. So for example if you enter “places to eat” into Google, you will not only get the normal organic results, but you will also get real time results that are specific to your area and pulled from social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. This process will probably be quicker than expected if twitter agree to sell to Google.

*SERP(s) = search engine results page(s)

Facebook Privacy And Why You Should Care!!

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

I have noticed there seems to be a lot more interest from people regarding their privacy on Facebook these days, maybe this is due to the media attention that it’s had recently. Personally I keep my account private and I think everyone should as this gives me full control of the information that I chose to share with people. The privacy features which come with Facebook is something not a lot of people use, or aware of which is mainly due to how complicated and confusing these features can be for the none technical people who use the social network. In the past 12 month we have seen Facebook role out a whole new set of privacy features to help users stay safe while using the site, so I thought I would create this blog to highlight some of the main privacy features that everyone should use and at least be aware of!

Lists

Social Media Marketing Glasgow

The friend’s lists in Facebook are a great feature, which not a lot of people know about. Facebook describes them as a feature which will allow you to create private groups of friends based on your personal preferences. For example, you can create a Friend List for your close friends that you see on a regular basis, you can create a list for work colleagues and people that you may have attended school with.  You can create Friend Lists for all of your needs, allowing you to quickly view your friends by type and also send messages to your lists.

A typical setup for a friends list and something I use personally would be “Friends”, “Family”, and “Professional”. These three groups can then be used to apply different privacy policies. For example, you may only want you closest friends to see photos from the party you were at last night, but you don’t want your family or professional contacts to see.

To create a list all you have to do is go to the friends section on Facebook

How To Use The Custom Settings

Facebook has made a lot of improvements in this area recently, to access this part of the site just go to the custom settings , once you are there you can select who has access to all of your information that you have shared on your Facebook account including pictures and your location which can be shared using Facebook Places. You can customize these setting and set this to friends only, friends of friends or everyone which will allow everyone on Facebook to have access to all your information. One of the great features is that you can customize your sharing settings so only certain people get to see what you want them to see. To do this just click on the drop down box and select the people you want to have access to this information.

These are just a few of the main privacy settings that I would recommend that everyone should use, I have also included a video below that was released by Facebook which will give you an overview of all the new changes to the privacy feature which they have rolled out to all users recently.
