How to Opt Out Of Facebook’s Facial Recognition

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Once again the social media giant has activated a new default setting without giving users any prior warning, meaning all users must opt out from within the sites privacy settings.  According to a report from Sophos, the new feature which is currently being rolled out globally, implements a new facial recognition technology allowing users to easily tag friends in pictures.  This means when you are given the option to tag friends in pictures, Facebook will use the new facial recognition technology to group your friends that it identifies together, allowing you to tag them in groups.

This is not the first time that Facebook has implemented a new feature without alerting users and is sure to upset many privacy focused users of the site.

A Facebook spokesperson told CNET

“When we announced this feature last December, we explained that we would test it, listen to feedback, and iterate before rolling it out more broadly. We should have been more clear with people during the rollout process when this became available to them. Tag suggestions are now available in most countries and we’ll post further updates to our blog over time.”

  • Go to your privacy settings.
  • Click “Customize settings.”
  • Scroll down to “Things others share.”
  • Find “Suggest photos of me to friends.”
  • Edit accordingly.

Is This The End For Tweetdeck ?

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

{EAV_BLOG_VER:350241e2eef874fd}

According to various sources online including CNN and CNET Twitter has now finalized the deal to acquire social media client Tweetdeck for $40 million and shares. This comes after weeks of speculation on who would purchase the popular third party app . The rumour broke back in April when The Wall Street Journal reported a deal worth around $40 – $50 million was close to being complete.

It was also reported that UberMedia which has a history in buying 3rd party Twitter apps was also interested in purchasing the London based company for $25 to $30 million as they had a 30-day exclusive on the negotiations, but they took too long, and Twitter jumped in with a higher offer. It’s also been rumoured that Ubermedia is building its own micro blogging rival to compete with Twitter which may have also increased Twitters interest in acquiring Tweetdeck.

Twitter is keeping quiet on the deal with a Tweet late on Monday night that said ““For all those who might be curious, we continue to not comment on rumors.” Tweetdeck have also not taken any calls or emails.

Tweetdeck is arguably the best Twitter desktop application and is credited with 13% of all daily tweets. Based in London the company was set up in 2008 by Ian Dodsworth and has received a total of $3.8 million in funding over the past three years from various VC’s including The Accelerator Group and Betaworks.

So what does this mean for Tweetdeck users? Does Twitter really want a desktop client or will they decide to kill it off, forcing its users back to the Twitter website. Tweetdeck also supports various other social media platforms including Facebook, Foursquare and Google Buzz, will this continue if they keep the desktop app alive? These questions are surley going to leave Tweetdecks users worried.

Google Launches + 1

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Yesterday Google launched its new “+ 1” service which is designed to enhance the social functionality within its search engine. The new service which is Google’s version of the Facebook “like” or the “retweet” button will add a “ + 1 button” to search results within Google and allow users to publicly share recommendations with friends.

To recommend something all you have to do is click on the “+1 button” on any webpage, this will then share the information within you Google Profile and social circle, which will mainly be your contacts from other Google services including Gmail, Google Reader, Google Buzz and Google Chat , although Google has confirmed that It would be interested in using data from other services including Flickr, Quora and Twitter which Google considers “open web apps”.

According to Google Product Manager Rob Spiro “The beauty of “+1′s” is their relevance – you get the right recommendations (because they come from people who matter to you), at the right time (when you are actually looking for information about that topic) and in the right format (your search results),”.

One of the main concerns of many people in theonline marketingworld is how will this effect organic search and SEO ?, Google rep Jim Prosser confirmed that +1 would not have any effect, however this is something that Google is very interested in and may look at incorporating in the future.

Will this be another failure like Buzz and Wave or has Google finally managed to put together a social product that the users will actually find useful ! what’s your thoughts ?

If you are in the US and would like to experiment with “+ 1″ then you can check it out here Google.com/experimental

How Social Media Connected Japan !

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

It’s been almost a week since the devastating scenes in Japan which left most of us in shock, and it’s during times like these we don’t realize how powerful Social Media can be in a time of crisis. Following its influence in political events in places such as Egypt, Tunisia and Libya over the past few weeks, social media was once again used to connect people in a time of need.

With many of Japans communication systems being down since the tragedy the internet has seemed to remain untouched, allowing the people of Japan to communicate with family and loved ones who may have been affected by the earthquake.  One of the first tools to appear on the web was the Google People Finder which acts as a directory and message board so people with friends and family who are missing can look for lost loved ones and post notes saying they are safe.

Not only is Social Media being used to help people communicate it’s also being utilized to help gather support for the country, many aid organization are using Twitter to reach a wider audience including the Red Cross who have launched also launched a similar service to Google and a “Text REDCROSS” campaign, which quickly became a trending topic on Twitter following the rush of people willing to donate to help the victims.

We have also seen most of the main stream media outlets use videos, pictures and updates that have been shared across sites such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr in there breaking reports from all around the world.

Following the earthquake on Friday the U.S. embassy in Japan encouraged any of its U.S. citizens in the country to use text messages and social media sites such and Twitter and Facebook as a means to communicate and connect with family overseas.

A lot has been said about Social Media over the past few months, some of it bad, some of it good but there is no denying that in a time of need and crisis this is one of our most important assets.

Google Launches New “Personal Profiles”

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Google announced last night that they have begun to roll out a redesign of its Google Profile pages, this is the profile that allows Google account users to add pictures and information about them. If you pick to have you Google Profile set as public then there is a very good chance when someone searches for you this will be the first thing that they will come across, which could be very important should you be looking to create a personal brand online.

One of the things that you will notice straight away is the similarities to Facebook. The profile page also allows you to enter detailed information including age, occupation, photos, social media sites and your location . Making it look a lot more professional compared to its predecessor.

In a blog post which announced the new profiles Google reiterates that Google Profiles are designed for individuals, not businesses; Google claims it’s working on “new ways for businesses to engage with their customers,” and hopefully we can expect some updates there in the near future.

Could all these recent updates to the various Google services be the beginning of the much rumoured “Google Me” or “Google + 1” which is said to be the backbone of Google’s next attempt at social media.

Facebook Rolls Out New Pages !!!

Friday, February 11th, 2011

You may notice something different if you log in to you Facebook Page this morning. The social media giant rolled out several new changes to their pages platform last night with a much cleaner design and a few changes to the page architecture. If you have been using the new Facebook profile then this will be very familiar as they have implemented the same design and features with a few extras which keeps the new design more consistent across the full site.

Some of the new features include

  • New Layout
  • The ability to switch between your profile and the pages that you manage
  • Browse Facebook as your page
  • New photo banner model
  • The ability to add iframes to tabs

The have also introduced a new keyword filter for pages which describes itself as filtering out “words and phrases marked as offensive by the broader community,” without elaborating on what the specific words are nor whether the community alluded to means people on the site or the world at large.

Overall this is a pretty big update from Facebook and an overall improvement to the previous version of Facebook Pages.

What’s your thoughts on this update ?
