It’s all free but do you need it?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

The Internet boasts a wealth of opportunities many of which are entirely free, but just because it comes without a price tag is it necessarily worth it?

With the importance of social media shouted at every opportunity plus the dozens of success stories splashed across every industry blog and news sites it is very easy for anyone to get caught up in excitement and rigmarole of it all.  Businesses have wisened up to the fact that customers are online and that they need to join the conversation.

What can they learn or benefit from doing so?

  • They can receive  valuable feedback
  • Create meaningful relationships with the target audience
  • Identify any upset or complaining customers and help
  • Communicate the brand message to a wide audience
  • Promote their products and services

So, from the outset, it would make good business sense utilise every direct channel to the consumer.  The, its free so what’s the harm, approach to online marketing, whilst having good intentions, is not the best approach to producing effective results. Social media requires time, above everything else, and as we all know time is money so whilst your Facebook profile will come without a price its success will not.

Something for free is nice, but when it comes to building your online presence remember that creating multiple profiles can cost in multiple ways; time and reputation. Any online profile bearing your brand should be kept up to date and to engage your target market this will require constant attention, if a profile is created and abandoned then this will have a negative impact upon your brand image.

It is very easy to set up a page, profile or channel on every social and business network you come across, but before doing so it is worth considering the real value it will bring to your online presence. These online tools are not generically suitable for every business, it is worth remembering that a certain type of people are using them for a reason, and whatever that person is using that website for does it necessarily fit in with your business?

Before any business embarks on an online marketing campaign thorough research must be performed into the marketplace; who are your customers and what online media are they using? Embarking on a wild social media crusade without any planning or preparation will only result in wasted time and effort. Rather than juggle multiple accounts and profiles, each of which will no doubt require a different strategy, opt to streamline all energies into one cohesive social media strategy that may not be entirely free but it will provide a much more pleasing ROI.

Diary of the Twitter Newbies

Exciting news this week, we broke the 100 followers mark- big deal for us not so much for everyone else who seems to be celebrating their 500 followers. Our 100 followers, however, are an indication that we are doing something right!

We have also discovered lately that we are becoming a lot more comfortable with the concept of micro-blogging, at first we were unsure of what to write about telling people that you’re away to tuck into a bowl of soup just doesn’t sound that interesting does it?? However, as we have started making connections with people in our local area we have also found ourselves lamenting with them about menial subjects such as the rubbish weather and even discussing the books we are reading- showing that chit chat isn’t always boring.

Looking at at it from a business point of view we have also became more comfortable using it as a tool, using our experienced followers to ask if there are any good business networking events going on and for inspiration for our blog, in every instance the response has always been positive and for any prospective business Twitterers we would encourage you to lose inhibitions when it comes to asking for help from the Twitter community.

Last weeks Tip was to retweet, which we have been trying to do. We have a look at what others were retweeting and if we are honest we didn’t really understand the relevance of retweeting what they did… again this led us into uncomfortable territory: do you retweet everything? or just things you are interested in? or just from people you converse with? In the end we settled for just retweeting fun things, such as “RT Whats your favourite movie, mine is Stepbrothers” – not entirely business related but we are newbies, as you know, and the whole concept of retweeting is still a bit beyond us.

I think a little research is still required on the whole retweeting malark… so we will not be setting a new task/tip for ourselves this week. Next week we will give you a proper rundown of how to use retweets to benefit your business- promise!

Diary of the Twitter Newbies

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

It’s now been a good few weeks since we started the Twitter Diaries and so far, last week was one of the most exciting, not only because we gained quite a large amount of followers, but also because we began to integrate much more within the fabulous Twitter community. With tip #4, we were to find people in our local area with a Twitter tool. We used the Twitter Grader where we were able to see the top Tweeters in our area and start to follow them and interact. This led us to find out about an up coming Twitter event in our area which we are all set to go to, although we are slightly nervous but excited about. We’re sure meeting people we have been talking to online will not be at all weird!

One great factor of following people located near us (instead of celebs in America!) is that they are on the same time zone meaning we are awake when they are, so we don’t miss out in all the fun chat. Also, we have been able to speak to people of similar professions which is great for networking.

All in all, this week has been very positive and has made both myself and Laura become closer to being Twitter pros. So what next for us Twitter Newbies?

Tip #5

This weeks tips comes from a lot of reading up on Twitter and so we are going to aim at linking to sites and topics that we are talkng about. This will hopefully be entertaining for our followers making our chat even more fun (impossible I know!). Additionally, we are going to try to retweet topics and fun tweets as we hear this is all the rage!

Time for Tip #3, but before we move on though lets have a quick look at Tip #2 and what exciting delights it brought us.

So Tip #2 was to interact with fellow Twitterers; this involved communicating with people following us (including the Smores), seeking out new people to follow using the search facility, and following those people who are following us.

The results were pretty insignificant, it is fair to say that a lot of people started following us but an almost equal amount stopped which meant there was no significant increase in followers.

It is fair to say that we found it hard interacting with our followers & those we were following; we just don’t have that much in common with them, and as for the celebs… well what do you Tweet to Demi Moore?! Effort will have to be made to seek out fellow Twitterers who share similar interests, so we can work on interacting.

The exercise wasn’t completely wasted, however, we did have a few replies from fellow Twitterers, obviously enamored with our fab chat, and on Friday @PammyWeaver got a boost when one of her followers recommended others to follow her. Which led to our discovery of the Follow Friday (they really should issue a handbook when you join), it took us 3 weeks to discover this fact but apparently on a Friday it is the ‘done thing’ to go out of your way to follow someone new.

“Instead of searching for people interested in the same topics as yourself #followfriday gives you the chance to find recommendations from friends who they think deserve your attention.” Makak Media

This has been duly noted and come next Friday we will be following and recommending like mad.

Moving swiftly onto our next tip.

Tip #3

We thought we would continue our ‘ interacting’ and use this weeks tip to look at our profile and what tips there are to spruce it up a bit. This weeks tip comes from Twittin Secrets, so sshh don’t tell anyone.

Optimize your 160 character “One Line Bio” which appears on the upper right of your Twitter profile page. In most cases the goal of the bio line is to get the reader to think you are “follow worthy.” Make it real, make it fun, make it interesting, make it YOU.

Make your personal picture (icon) a good one – in fact, make it great! Twitter is driven by personalities, so use a picture that expresses the “personality message” you want to get across. Logo’s, text, and images without humans or animals are often too business-like and negate the driving social force that propels Twitter.

Already I can see this tip being very helpful, am very much looking forward to scrapping my personal picture and replacing it with something a bit more professional. We will keep you posted on our progress.

See how well we did this week.

Retailers get social.

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Online market research company eMarketer have revealed that Facebook is the most popular site for US retailers to advertise on.

Okay so the statistics are based on US retailers, but nonetheless it definitely gives us some food for thought.

Being big advocates on Social Networking we are not surprised of this fact at all, having a look on Facebook you can see that British retailers are very much on the Social Media bandwagon as well.

Topshop Fashion Fix is an excellent application developed by Topshop for Facebook allowing users to rate clothes and receive up to the minute info on the latest goodies in store. Love it or Hate Marmite has its own Facebook page with a massive 147,000 fans! However, Facebook is not just for the big timers; Universities, Charities, Restaurants, Beauty Products, Sports Clubs, Politicians and Pubs are all in on the act.

Why? It is an excellent channel to your target market! They can help build social interaction with your consumer creating a loyalty not often achieved with advertising and the like.

However, when building a Corporate Facebook page, don’t make a profile up and leave it! Put some thought into it, create a message and create an engaging page that will not only attract your customers but will entice them into interacting with the profile. Are you creating a fan page, a fact page, a customer service page or perhaps an interactive application as Topshop did?? If done correctly your Facebook page can become a valuable part of your marketing strategy.

Following close behind Facebook and music counterpart MySpace is video website YouTube. YouTube is a hotspot for businesses to upload videos and commercials, it is free and if successful can create a buzz around your brand. Similarly, Flickr is a free photo sharing website that can be utilized to upload free product, advertising and company images.

Although these media sharing and social networking websites may not be directly suitable for every industry they are not a force to be reckoned with, and with niche sites, targeting everything from book fans to fashionistas, cropping up every week it will slowly become even easier for companies to connect to their target market.

Adding to the growing number of niche social networking sites is BookRabbit.com a site allowing you to hook up with fellow book worms and discuss what’s on your bookshelf… quite literally. (more…)
