Design Crush – edition 15

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Arguably one of the most used and important elements of any website design is the menu or navigation. The main menu is where users refer to when they want to navigate through the website. Therefore good navigation has a lot to answer for when it comes to creating successful usability in a website. And creating a menu that is not only easy to use but that enhances the look and feel of your website is something that can make all the difference to the overall usability of the site.

Website menus come in all shapes and sizes, colours and designs making them an interesting focus for this edition of Design Crush. There are many options when designing a menu; colour can be used to differentiate between options, icons can be used to make the menu options more easily identifiable or unique roll-over elements can be employed to add interest. There are many techniques you can employ when designing a menu, and putting in that extra detail can really make all the difference to the website design as a whole.

Here are a few examples of successful menu designs that I have come across recently:

Employing these different techniques can make it easier for you website menu to be well constructed, easily used and intuative. A well designed menu can encourage users to look through the website while a badly designed menu can put users off completely. Giving your site a unique and personal menu will not only keep users on your site but will add that all important sparkle that can set it apart from all the rest.

Reduce carbon emissions with the new Piper website

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Piper: Community Action on Climate Change and Sustainability has gone live this week.

Piper (Parents in Partnership Eco Representatives) is a community campaign aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The project focuses on 3 main communities; Balerno, Currie and Juniper Green, within each community two schools will be involved. The purpose of the project is to encourage parents and children within schools to take action to reduce carbon emissions.

Piper approached 360innovate looking to have a website developed for the project, the website needed to allow for future expansion of the project and had to be designed in a manner to encourage user interaction.

To fill this remit 360innovate designed and built one central website stemming out into the individual school sections. A forum, blog and providing interactive links to eco games and competitions encourage users of all ages to interact with the project and website.

If you are a charity or non profit organisation (or you just quite like this website) and would like a website similar to this one then please get in touch.

360innovate are pleased to announce that the Cathcart & District Housing Association website has officially went live.

About CDHA

Cathcart & District Housing Association is a community controlled housing association in Glasgow, their aim is to make Cathcart & District community a desirable place to live.

The Association currently has 279 houses in the Cathcart area and manages a further 279 on behalf of Glasgow Housing Association.

The Remit

Cathcart & District Housing Association required a brand new content managed website and a new logo design. For ease and optimal functionality they required a website they could update and run themselves on a day-to-day basis without requiring any in-depth knowledge or training. It needed to be easy to navigate and accommodate visitors of all IT skill levels, combining a strong logical layout and visual elements to complement the large amount of text content that was envisaged for the site.

The Solution

The new website is a brilliant first step for Cathcart Housing Association to establish their online presence. It is colourful and easy to navigate through; staff are able to update and manage the site with a content managed system that allows them to add/remove text or images quickly and when required.

The logo design was chosen from a selection of six initial designs and a number of colour variations to reach the final choice.
